FINEPHOTO: "The Name You Can Trust For Fine Vintage Photogravures & Photographs."
This is an authentic (NOT a modern reprint) vintage circa 1936/37 photogravure by the famous and controversial cinematographer/photographer Leni Riefenstahl. Photographically, Riefenstahl was renown for the artistry and atmosphere she infused into her imagery. This image was created at the height of Riefenstahl's career and fame during her award winning cinematic/photographic production of the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. The picture was made on location in Greece and captures a young male athlete in a g-string throwing the javelin. This artful composition was created by Riefenstahl just prior to the opening of the famous and lavishly staged 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. The 1936 Olympics were hosted by Nazi Germany and the Third Reich. This image is from a beautiful photogravure printing of Riefenstahl images by Deutschen Verlag in Germany in 1937, just after the Olympic Games and one year before the release of her controversial, internationally acclaimed film "Olympia" in 1938. The word "Finephoto" does not appear on the actual print.
THIS PHOTOGRAVURE IS GUARANTEED TO BE AUTHENTIC AND COMES WITH A COA (Certificate Of Authenticity) from Finephoto. Size of this high quality sheet fed gravure print is approximately 6 x 7.5 inches. Unfortunately a computer scan simply cannot pick up the soft tonality and the pronounced grain of this atmospheric print. Under magnification this piece shows a beautiful tight "honeycomb", excellent pressing of ink and a wide range of tone - all indicative of a high quality sheet fed gravure print. Condition is excellent for this 70+ year old photogravure.
READY FOR FRAMING & DISPLAY! - this photogravure is professionally trimmed with a small border surrounding the actual print to facilitate ease of matting and framing.
Note: there is incidental imagery on the reverse side of this plate from the original 2 sided printing which does not effect the image. This is a rare and dramatic image from the most controversial female photographic/cinematic artist in history. PLEASE SEE SPECIFICATIONS BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION.

LENI RIEFENSTAHL was born in Berlin in 1902. She studied painting and started her artistic career as a dancer. Soon after she became involved in motion pictures first as an actress and then as a director/filmmaker. She was and is compared with the greatest film artists in history but her life and career have been overshadowed by her associations with Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich in Nazi Germany. Her film artistry reached its zenith with the documentary "Olympia" and the film won huge international and critical acclaim including the gold medal in Paris in 1937, first place in Venice as the world's best film in 1938, the Olympic Award by the IOC in 1939, and in 1956 it had been classified as one of the world's best ten films. To this day "Olympia" is arguably considered to be the best sport documentary ever made.
Although after the war Riefenstahl was found innocent of any war crimes, she was essentially blackballed for much of her life and it wasn't until the 1960's when the international public began to accept her back into the artistic world with her photographic studies of the Nuba tribe in Africa. While her African Nuba work received critical applause and acceptance, she never again approached the levels of artistic greatness she achieved with Olympia. Apart from her controversial role in the Third Reich, Riefenstahl is renowned in film history for developing new aesthetics in her film and photographic work, especially in relation to the nude form. Her photographic expressions of the unclothed body are mesmerizing, groundbreaking and often cited by many other significant filmmakers, photographers and critics of the visual arts. Her atmospheric imagery has influenced countless beneficiaries from James Bond movie title sequences to the photographic romanticizing of the modern athlete. In 1937 her amazing photographic work from the production of "Olympia" was produced in a high quality photogravure printing by Deutschen Verlag in Germany which is now extremely rare. Leni Riefenstahl died in 2003 in Germany at the age of 101. For more information on the life and work of Leni Riefenstahl please visit:

ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure is an intaglio copper-plate print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate which means that that prints are taken by pressing paper heavily down upon an inked copper plate which has previously been etched to a depth corresponding with the depth of tone, or amount of ink, to be transfered to the paper at any given point.
Photogravure yields a true continuous tone intaglio print which combines qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, photogravure produces delicately rendered shading for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making.
COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESSES, photogravure is vastly more stable. By the early 20th century, when the photogravure rose to such prominence as a reproduction medium for photographs; the basic components that form the print, oil-based ink and paper, were well understood from the standpoint of stability. High quality sheet fed photogravure was the print process of choice when high quality images were desired in larger editions.
Photographers like Ruth Bernhard, Alfred Stieglitz, Bill Brandt, John Everard, Karl Blossfeldt, Edward Steichen and others made it their mission to open the eyes of the western world to the artistic potential of the photographic medium and they relied on the supple photogravure process to accomplish this end. Using photogravure they produced publications/compilations in the early to mid 1900's that enabled larger audiences, for the first time, to see and appreciate the aesthetic and artful capacity of photography. From Man Ray to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world's most famous photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process.
