Item specifics
Type: Tube RadioBrand: Zenith

The Holiday Season is almost here. This will make a great gift!!!!  Check out my me page for my website as I have other fine radios as well.

This is a 1938 Zenith 7 tube Walton model 7S232, Zenith’s most famous and collectable year. This radio has the fabulous “Robot Shutter Dial” with a green tuning eye. It is a striking radio from top to bottom. Zenith made four different chassis to fit into this style cabinet (7J232, 7S232, 9S232 & 12S232). For you radio collectors… This radio does have all the matching number stamps on the chassis, and paper tag on the bottom of the cabinet. The speaker has the correct part number for a 7-tube model.  The paper serial number tag on the bottom of the cabinet is missing. The chassis has the 7S232 stamp just above the antenna connection. The stamp on the wood at the top back is illegible, but it can be seen faintly. I can see a 7 but the other marks I can’t, they are a blur.  If you are looking for a cabinet and chassis, number match this radio has it. This is not a put together Walton with mix and matched parts. This chassis, speaker and cabinet are a factory match. I purchased this radio from the grandson of the original owner. It was all original when I got it, with only minor chassis repairs done many years ago. Before restoration pictures can be provided to the winning bidder if he or she requests them. Pictures posted in this listing have been taken with and without flash. The brighter pictures were flash. I did this so you can see the wood grain and detail of the cabinets finish. This is a showpiece! You will not be disappointed.

Cabinet: The book matched walnut veneered cabinet is beautifully finished with a near flawless lacquer finish. Every effort was taken to reproduce original look of this fine radio. No wood repairs were necessary. The cabinet was undamaged before restoration. The cabinet was stripped of its original finish, lightly sanded, re-stained, grain filled and then sprayed with Mohawk sealer and lacquer. Toning lacquer was sprayed on the wood trim, very lightly, to keep with the original appearance. The grille cloth is NOT a reproduction. It is a piece of original 1938 cloth from a console that used the same pattern.

Dial/Knobs: The famous black Zenith “Robot Shutter Dial” is in very nice condition as is the dial glass. The shutters open nicely. The white pointer and brass second hand are perfect and moves nicely around the dial. The four original wood Z knobs are also perfect.

Electronics/Chassis/Cord: The Superhetrodyne chassis is a performer and plays full dial scale. As you see from the pictures, the chassis has some rust spots. I did not think it was necessary for the chassis to be repainted. The radio has had a complete recap electronic restoration, all the electrolytic capacitors were replaced with new production parts. All the paper foil capacitors were replaced too. The dial belt was replaced for smooth tuning. The chassis has all “G” glass tubes, no metal or “ST” shaped tubes. All tube shields are in place as well. The radio is sensitive enough to get the local stations just fine. The radio has very nice reception with no hum. A brand new NOS green eye tube was installed to dress up its playing and viewing appearance. An outside antenna is necessary on old tube radios or a long wire. However, this one also plays perfectly on a short lead wire as well. A new AC power cord has been installed for safety.

Email me with any questions. Look at the pictures closely. I have a “Buy it Now” for the bidder that wants it without going thru a full auction. Do not pass up this fine radio. While you see Walton radios listed for sale here on eBay all the time, you will not find one as nice as this one. Good luck.

Please Read!

The Terms and Conditions Below Before Bidding

  • Please no bidders with negative feedback. You must have at least 10 feedbacks to bid. If you do not, email me first before bidding.
  • No foreign sales! USA Sales ONLY.
  • EBay requires PayPal payments.
  • Email me if payment must be by other type. We will discuss.
  • Payment due within 3 days after end of auction.
  • Please contact me with any questions.
  • No returns, all sales are final. The radio does work as described, but I do not guarantee 71-year-old radios. No warranty expressed or implied. The radio will be tested before it is placed in the box and will function as described.
  • Buyer pays all shipping and insurance costs from zip code 91780. Buyer pays for all packing supplies, boxes, bubble rap etc and UPS or FedEx packing fees. I will not personally pack this radio. The box will be an odd size, so two boxes will be necessary to make one larger box. Double boxing will require four boxes at buyer’s option. Keep this in mind when you are considering shipping cost. I will ship via the buyer’s choice of carriers. The buyer agrees not to hold the seller liable for shipping damage. Any damage must be handled thru the shipper and packager.
  • I cannot calculate shipping cost until the radio is boxed and then weighed. So please do not use the shipping calculator. I do not know how to remove this feature for the listing. I will not have this radio boxed until the reserve has been met. If you need to know the approximate shipping costs, the radio when boxed will be about 50 to 60 lb. and guess about $50 in packing supplies and fees. Then my zip code 91780 to yours.
