| 1942 Boston JOHN SINGLETON COPLEY Square HISTORY …… For many years in the first half of the 20th century, the State Street Trust Company of Boston maintained a happy tradition of publishing a wonderful and significant book each year, each volume exploring some historical topic relevant to the city of Boston and Massachusetts, often commemorating some historical anniversary. This work was largely done by Allan Forbes, a Bostonian with lineage back to the old sea captains, who eventually became the president of State Street Trust, and who must have been as interested in these historical researches as in his job as the officer of a bank. This particular book, published here in 1942 as a first edition, is an interesting one -- COPLEY SQUARE; A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ITS HISTORY, INCLUDING A SHORT SKETCH OF THE FAMOUS ARTIST FOR WHOM THE SQUARE WAS NAMED, WITH ILLUSTRATIONS OF INTERESTING BUILDINGS, PORTRAITS BY COPLEY, AND EARLY VIEWS. As promised in the title, there is much on John Singleton Copley, on Copley Square – its history and development, and lots of interesting vintage photographs of the Square through the years, and buildings that were once there, or are still there. …… COPLEY SQUARE; A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ITS HISTORY, INCLUDING
