Notes: Drawing on the research of Henri Onde, civil engineer Thomas Hay looks at the 'U-ness' and 'V-ness' of English valleys and the possibility that their shape may be dependent on the speed of ice movement within it. In putting Seathwaite, Taylor Gill Force and Styhead Gill valleys to the test of measurement, Hay hoped to clear up the mystery of the Pennine valleys themselves. Further, Hay investigates the idea that the amount of erosion effected by an ice stream will vary with the depth and the velocity of the ice and that it will increase as these variables themselves increase; examines the occurrence of 'needle ice' at Grisedale Beck and the curious Helvellyn Stone Stripes
