Very interesting postal cover (letter content not present) with return address of ENS Pierre Salinger, USS SC 1368, Fleet Post Office, San Francisco, California, to his mother, Mrs. Herbert Salinger, San Francisco, CA, US 6c Globemaster airmail stamp tied with U.S. Navy, Sep 17 1945, postmark, US Navy 10499 Branch (located at Guam, Mariana Islands), Sep 17 1945, postmark to left. Pierre Salinger (1925-2004) was Press Secretary from 1961-64 for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He later became a high profile news correspondent for American Broadcasting Company (ABC). Salinger was the manager for the Presidential campaign of Robert F. Kennedy. After graduating from the University of San Francisco in 1947, Salinger began his career in journalism as a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle and a contributing editor for the old Collier's magazine in the 1940s-50s. He served briefly for about five months in the U.S. Senate, filling a vacancy left by Clair Engle. Devastated by Robert F. Kennedy's assassination in 1968 (he was standing only 10-12 feet away when the shot was fired), he moved to France to become a correspondent for L'Express. In 1978 he was hired by ABC News as Paris Bureau chief. Salinger became their chief European correspondent, based in London, in 1983. While employed for the network, Salinger earned an Emmy for his coverage in the aftermath of the bombing of Pan Am Flight #103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988. Leaving ABC, Salinger returned briefly to Washington DC, then returned to France in 2000, where he was a popular TV pundit. Salinger became known in his later years for his highly controversial claims that friendly fire from the U.S. Navy was the cause of the TWA Flight 800 crash off eastern Long Island, New York, when he fell victim to an Internet hoax. Salinger's initial conviction in this has led to the coining of a new term, "Pierre Salinger Syndrome," which refers to the belief of all information found on the World Wide Web. In Nov 2000, Salinger became exasperated when he was denied permission to give what he believed to be exonerating evidence before the Scottish Court In the Netherlands when two Libyans were being tried for their part in the plot in the Pan Am Flight 103 disaster. Outside the court Salinger stated that he knew who the real bombers were, but was told by the trial judge, Lord Sutherland, "It you wish to make a point, you may do so elsewhere, but I'm afraid you may not do so in this court." Dispirited and marginalized, Salinger later permanently moved back to France, where he died in Oct 2004 at age 79. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Just fine condition, some glue discoloration at sideflaps on reverse. *** We have been in the paper Americana and postal history businesses since 1953 and are members of the Manuscript and Ephemera Societies as well as the American Stamp Dealers Association, American Philatelic Society, Canadian Stamp Dealers Association (Canada), Philatelic Traders Society (Great Britain) and numerous other collector organizations. |
