eBay store listing. This isn't a traditional auction, instead of bidding,
this has an asking price which we'll take or people can make an offer
against it which we review. Because I have to use Buy it Now on these, I
set them to require approval to bid - it's the only way to keep scam artists
from ending the listing (eBay makes it real tough to get the fees back). So
if you're interested in this item, please shoot me an email before you try
to offer or buy it. Thanks for your understanding.
1948 Hudson Special Six 4dr sedan. First year for the Step-down design and one of the first new postwar cars. I found this car by accident looking for parts for my beater truck, and had I not bought it it would have been crushed, another rougher Hudson was crushed the day I took this one home. I flat-towed it 125 miles, it was on the road only 10 years ago. Given this would not take a lot to put together, I couldn't see it going to scrap.
The body that's here is pretty decent; front doors are solid; rears show a bit of rot at the bottom. Rockers look good but do have some filler in them. Floors appear to all be solid except some of the trunk. The lower lip the quarters mount to needs some repair. The quarters are actually in the back of the car - there is a little rot to the lower leading edges, I don't know if anyone is making a patch for these or not. The deck lid is fine, the biggest rot issues on this are the rear bumper mounts and the rear subframe rails where they first kick up for the rear axle - you'll need a couple feet of box tubing to patch them up, but it's under the car - the welds need to be strong, but not pretty. Someone set this car up for a Chevy or late GM engine, with the through-bolt type mounts, and automatic transmission (the added trans crossmember isn't shown). It may even have been finished this way, the driveshaft appears to have been made up to connect the stock rearend to a GM trans. The paint on it is just about presentable, too, it will be easy to prep (especially as opposed to a car the paint's gone from and the body is rough and pitted).
The other problem with this car is it's been stripped, either before or while at the place I got it from - you will need to round up a parts car to complete it. The rear glass and taillights are 48-49 only, but the rest of the parts could come from any 48-54 long-wheelbase Hudson sedan (which we have a couple of in stock). Among the missing pieces: Front bumper, entire front clip, dashboard, steering wheel was removed by torching off the top of the column (saw it off lower and use a U-joint to hook up a late GM column?), inside window garnishes, door handles, window cranks, some latch parts, trunk latch, taillights, rear glass, and the gas tank. The side glass on this car is rolled down, but is there, the driver's door is apart but the vent window turned up on the floor - it is possible more parts are in the car, both seats are in it. There are also two spare doors, one front, one back, inside.
But with a complete (perhaps more rusted) parts car, an EZ-wire kit, and your choice of GM motor, this car could be finished and ready to drive in the spring. I thought I would give it a run on here and let someone have a chance at it, but if no one is too excited by it I already have a line on some parts cars and I have several motors that could be installed in this (and being a 3200-lb car it doesn't need a stump-puller to move). Eventually I will get around to putting it together. You guys out west may think it's junk, but for a northeastern car this is pretty good - I've seen Hudsons like this that were so rusty they collapsed into pieces 35 years ago and they gave up on trying to get them to the crusher.
If this was your car and you recognize it, let me know, I'd love to find out more of the history on this car. I'm thinking there is a good chance someone might recognize it, there's not a lot of these floating around locally anymore.
Terms of sale: All cars are sold AS-IS. These are old cars and many have
rust issues, they can have problems which are not apparent without a more
detailed inspection and as such we may not be aware of the issues. Any
prospective buyer is welcomed to make an appointment to come inspect a car
in person prior to buying. Nonrefundable deposit of 10% or $500 whichever
is greater due within 7 days. Must be paid in full or arrangements made
within 14 days. 30 days storage is included to give you plenty of time to
arrange to get the vehicle. We're flexible with weather concerns
particularly in the winter; storage on paid cars can be arranged in advance
for $50 per month, but if a buyer can't be contacted or is unable to make
suitable arrangements, $10 per day storage fees will be applied against the
amount that's been paid on the car. We're not unreasonable, but we do need
to run this as a proper business.

eBay forces me to include this redundant and confusing statement in this listing - their words, not mine: “This vehicle is being sold for parts only and is not operational or street legal. Therefore, upon purchase, it will need to be either towed or trailered. eBay encourages its members to learn about their state laws governing vehicle sales prior to the sale or purchase of a vehicle.”
