1952 Hallicrafters S-72 r Portable Short Wave Set Exc

Interesting and early Hallicrafters model S-72r portable ... This set pre-dates the Hallicrafters Trans-Oceanic clone and certainly appears to be a more elaborate and better built radio than the later ones. It uses 8 all miniature tubes in a well thought out circuit with an RF amp front end and a single conversion super-het design. Covers .54 to 30 MC in four bands. Free manual available for download at bama.sbc.edu site.Introduced in 1949 as the S-72 .. the S-72r appears to be the same set [the Dachis book mentions no differences that he can find]. This one is dated inside 1952.

It's in great condition .. unusual to find a portable in such good shape. There are are few very minor spots on the brown leatherette covering and a couple of spots of edge wear but overall it looks great. Original leather handle is still solid, original antenna still has the tip and works fine. The brass face plate and dial area are in great shape .. no tarnish or corrosion, all original knobs and the tuning mechanism works smoothly. I took a chance and tried powering the set up .. and while it passed the "smoke test" just fine it did not have any reception. I suspect that the filament circuit is series string and one dead tube would render the whole receiver dead. Certainly it will need new filter & coupling caps .. Looks to be all original inside including the power cord. A hard to find Hallicrafters in unusually nice condition ... Measures approx 14" X 12" X 7" and well packed shipping weight will be 20 pounds from zip code 24012.
