Notes: First is an interesting overview of attempts to measure Everest's height over one hundred years. De Graaff-Hunter features various results including that of Waugh, Burrard, his own and those of Gulatee.  Also includes a brief eulogy for Edward Felix Norton, written by Eric Shipton and titled "Norton of Everest: An Appreciation."

Although Everest had commanded attention for many years and sporadic and incomplete efforts had been undertaken in earlier years, it was not until 1852 that the first 'official' measurement - 29,002 feet above sea level - was recorded by the British Trigonometrical Survey of India, a remarkable feat given the limited means and primitive instruments of the period. Surprisingly perhaps, the figure was remarkably accurate; it remained the officially accepted height for more than one hundred years and only in 1955 was it slightly adjusted to 29,028 feet (8,848m), only 26 feet adrift of the 1852 figure.

Eric Shipton's eulogy for Edward Felix Norton recalls a classic phase (1921-24) of Everest mountaineering. Norton participated in the Everest expeditions of 1922 and 1924 reaching great altitudes on both occasions: his 8570 meter record (reached on the grand couloir route) stood for more than 20 years. He took over leadership of the 1924 expedition when Charles Bruce fell ill and was praised for handling affairs in the aftermath of the disappearance of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine.
