You are bidding on a very old and rare SOLID WOOD (very heavy) plaque from the 1960's that was made by Ernie Montella's Laminated Plaque company (this hung in my Uncle's basement for over 40 years). If you google Ernie Montella, you will find that his plaques were SO popular that they are now sold as tabletop reproductions (much smaller than the original plaque). This one is of the famous 1958 BALTIMORE COLTS team. It has 27 football cards from 1957 arranged and then laminated around a black/white 8 X 10 photo of the championship game. The 27 cards are of : Bill Pellington, Jim Parker, Art Spinney, Dicj Szymanski, Gene Lipscomb, Weeb Ewbank, George Preas, Raymond Berry, John Unitas, Carl Tasseff, Johnny Sample, Alan Ameche, Milt Davis, Ordell Braase, Lenny Lyles, Gino Marchetti, Andy Nelson, Leo Sanford, Steve Myhra, Buzz Nutter, L.G. Dupre, Alex Sandusky, George Shaw, Jim Mutscheller, Lenny Moore, Art Donovan, and Louis Dupre. Taped on the back of the plaque is letterhead from the plaque company with s description of the 1958 championship game. Also taped above it is the original ad selling this plaque for $225.00. NOw...the coolest thing is that AFTER this plaque was purchased my uncle had Johnny Unitas autograph it for him personally at his restaraunt (The Golden Arm) yearssss ago (according to my aunt). The plaque measures 26" X 20". The overall condition is very good. Please email me with any questions. Thanks for looking! Please check out my other BALTIMORE COLTS auctions. On May-15-08 at 04:01:29 PDT, seller added the following information:I emailed Mr Ernie Montella to find out more about this plaque. Here is what I got back in response:
Hi Karen,
In response to your inquiry about the 1958 Baltimore Colts plaque you have here is the background. About 20 years ago I was asked by friends of some of those depicted on that plaque to design something to commemorate that team.As you know the 1958 NFL Championship is now known as the defining factor of pro football as we know it today. My laminated display plaques were very popular in the hey day of collecting in the mid 1970's & 1980's as I attended Sports Conventions all over the country with them. Several members of that 1958 team had me design originals for them. The football cards on that plaque are the original cards issued. There are NO copies. Some of those cards are quite expensive (including Johnny Unitas's ROOKIE card). The problem with trying to sell it on e-bay is one of the bidders not knowing what you are offerring. They believe it to be a poster and not single actual cards. As I recall my sale price at that time was about $200-$250. Good luck with your sale but you would be better off if you located a fan of thae 1958 Colts. Someone who owns a sports decorated bar or restaurant.
Regards
Ernie Montella
