Reproduction Prints of the 1962 U.S. Patent
for the Gibson EB-2 Electric Bass Guitar
This auction is for a set of reproduction prints of the original United States Patent for the Gibson EB-2 Electric Bass Guitar with string mute.
In 1958, Gibson began their practice of introducing a bass model to accompany many new guitar designs. The bass companion to the classic ES-335 guitar was introduced in this year as the EB-2. In fact, the EB-2 was basically a bass guitar neck mated to the thinline body of the ES-335.
The application for this patent was filed in April of 1960 and was granted on January 2, 1962. Ironically, by the time the patent was awarded, production of the EB-2 had been temporarily halted and not resumed until 1964. The patent was issued to Larry Allers and assigned to Gibson, Inc., of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
There are two separate patent drawings included in this auction and each will be provided on artist quality, acid-free, 60-pound parchment style paper as shown above.
