The Washington Head Quarter design is the longest running design of any US Coinage. It was minted from 1932 through 1998 with none struck in 1933 and 1975, with a Bi-Centennial Quarter issued in 1976. This design was originally intended as a “one year” Commemorative Coin to honor the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. The Washington Head Quarter was designed by John Flanagan whose design was chosen over 97 other designs in an open competition. There was no justification for production of quarters in 1932 as there was very little economic activity due to the “Great Depression”. No quarters had been minted in 1931 and the only US Coins minted in 1932 were the Commemorative Quarters and a small number of Pennies. No quarters were minted in 1933, but in 1934, Congress decided to continue producing the John Flanagan design on regular-issue quarters. The only change added his initials which can be seen at the base of George Washington’s neck. The Mint-Mark (on Denver and San Francisco coins) is just below the wreath on the reverse. However in 1965, 1966 and 1967 no Mint Marks were used to prevent Coin Collectors from hoarding the quarters. Then in 1968 the “D” and “S” Mint Marks were resumed and placed on the obverse near the ribbon binding George Washington’s hair. In 1980, the Philadelphia Mint Mark was also added to the quarters. In 1999, the 10 year State Quarter Program began with 5 different Reverse Designs each year to commemorate each state in the order they became states. This program ends in 2008 (OK, NM, AZ, AK & HI).
