This is a 1961 intra-company bulletin published by
J. W. Roberts Ltd.,
A Turner & Newall company. “FIRE PROTECTION PLUS WITH Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos. A SUCCESS STORY AT I.C.I. At the time of erection in 1934, considerable areas of structural steelwork at the Oil Works of Imperial Chemical Industries Limited, Billingham, Co. Durham (now operated by Heavy Organic Chemicals Division) were insulated for fife protection, direct over shop primer with a coating of Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos 11" thick, reinforced with expanded metal and surfaced with a finish of BD.2 Cement. During the ensuing 25 years the coatings have, on more than one occasion, functioned effectively by protecting and maintaining intact, the steelwork against the effects of fire. Moreover, they have fulfilled an uncovenanted but most important function by preventing corrosive attack on the structure. for on the most recent removal of the insulation for inspection purposes in 1960. the steelwork was found to be still in excellent condition, as illustrated in the I.C.I. photographs reproduced above. The structure is open to the weather and the local atmosphere. typical of that prevailing in a large chemical works processing a variety of materials, presents many corrosion problems. The photograph overleaf is of an extensively corroded toe board in the structure, not insulated with Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos but painted at regular intervals during the twenty-five year period. Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos has, In fact, accomplished three distinct tasks on this application: 1. Provided fire protection with only one tenth the weight of concrete. 2. Prevented corrosion. 3. Obviated the need for repeated painting, the saving in painting costs outweighing the original cost of the Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos application. Fire Ratings of up to 6 hours on floors and structural steelwork have been granted by official testing authorities In many countries, endorsing the outstanding qualities of Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos for fire protection. The versatility of Sprayed LIMPET Asbestos is shown by the following typical but varied applications:-Dorval Airport-Montreal 350,000 sq. ft., Skerryvore Lighthouse Complete Interior,. s.s... Rotterdam" 400,000 sq. ft., British Railways de Luxe Diesel Electric Pullman Trains 60,000 sq. ft., in which one coating provides simultaneously :Fire Protection, Thermal Insulation, Noise Level Reduction, Condensation Control.” The bulletin also promotes
Ferobestos (asbestos reinforced plastics for wearing and bearing applications in all branches of engineering) and
LIMPET (incombustible lining board for buildings, vehicles and ships). By design, there are holes punched in the left margin where the bulletin was inserted into a company binder for use as a sales tool. This type of asbestos literature is extremely rare and difficult to find.
