On offer in this auction is a complete 1965-66 Coca-Cola (Coke) NHL Panel Card Set in the issued Album, in overall near mint minus (NM-) condition. The album itself is unmarked and very clean, with wonderful glossy and colourful covers, which show only minor surface imperfections consisting of a few light creases on the covers. All cover and page corners are sharp, showing little or no wear. The cards are consistently near mint (NM), except for the Boston Bruin and New York Rangers cards that suffer from microscopic pinpricks that are almost invisible, being very difficult to see, and which are not visually detracting in any way. The fragile paper stock cards were placed into the album extremely carefully, with none of the card corners being damaged. However, slight pressure marks can be seen on the corners of the cards where they were placed and came into contact with the album. Significantly the card fronts show absolutely no surface wear at all. Many cards do suffer from this type of wear, since due to the fold-out nature of the album, the card fronts of two pages are folded on top of each other, and the resulting contact can scuff them. The high quality of the cards can best be seen in the scan of the Toronto Maple Leaf team set where every card shows a deep, rich, clean black background. In this promotion, Coke issued their production in Canada with bottle caps with a "crossed hockey stick" design and under those caps the cork liners had an NHL team printed on the liner. Once ten liners with the same team name was collected, you could submit the liners through the mail and receive the corresponding NHL team set of eighteen (18) attached, perforated cards. The cards, made on thick paper stock, are extremely significant as the first card issue to have printed on the back the player's complete NHL and minor league career statistics. At the end of each team's panel set was a mail-in card that could be sent in with 50 cents to obtain an album that would hold the complete set of 108 cards. The latest catalogue value I have found for this set in NM condition lists the 108-card set at $800.00 and the album at $150.00.
