1978 Guyana 8 Coin Proof
Set With Box
This 8 coin 1978 Guyana Proof
Set is a must for the serious collector of fine and valuable coins. This
coin set was minted by The Franklin Mint under authorization of the Government
of The Cooperative Republic of Guyana. This un-circulated
proof set of coins comes in original box with protective cover, certificate of
authenticity, and information card. Only
3,825 were minted. The coins are as
follows:
Guyana lies on the north-central coast
of South America, between Venezuela
on the west, Surinam on the
east and Brazil
on the south. The Dutch established the nation’s first settlement in 1596. However, England
won the competition among European powers to colonize the country and founded
British Guiana in 1831. Guyana became a sovereign nation
upon declaring independence in 1966.
The coinage of the Republic of Guyana bears designs that reflect the
nation’s proud heritage and exotic wildlife.
Six of the eight coins portray wild animals native to this beautiful
land, while the other two honor heroes who played a dominant role in Guyana’s rise
to independence.
The coins range in denomination
from ten dollars to one cent. The large
ten-dollar coin – minted in solid sterling silver (0.925 fine) – carries the
dramatic profile of Curry, fighter for freedom in Guyana’s rise to independence.
The five-dollar coin bears a
striking portrait of Guyana’s
diplomatic statesman, H.N. Critchlow.
This coin is minted in 0.500 fine silver.
The caiman, an alligator-like
creature that grows to a spectacular 15 ½ feet in length, is depicted on the
new one-dollar coin. This fearsome
creature battles primarily large animals capable of giving it a real struggle.
The fifty-cent coin shows the
canje pheasant, which is regarded as one of the missing links in the evolution
of birds from reptiles – a remarkable creature whose young have temporary claws
on their wings to enable them to climb trees.
The harpy eagle, portrayed on
the twenty-five-cent coin, is one of the strongest birds of prey in all the
world.
A furry and delicate monkey
capable of amazing leaps from tree to tree – the sakiminki – appears on the
ten-cent coin.
The jaguar, the most ferocious
cat in the Western Hemisphere, is shown on the
five-cent coin.
The one-cent coin depicts the
huge but gentle manatee – the “sea cow” – whose fondness for water plants is
such that it can be heard feeding at a distance of 200 yards.
The reverse design on each of
the coins in the set displays the nation’s coat of arms which emphasizes Guyana’s
abundant agricultural and mineral resources, as well as its intriguing plants
and animals. The inscription “One
People”, One Nation, One Destiny” is Guyana’s national motto and
reflects the self-confidence and determination of the people of this new
nation.
