| John P Holland is widely acknowledged to have been the inventor of the modern diesel-electric submarine at the turn of the last century. He produced the first submarine to be purchased by the U.S. Navy, the U.S.S. Holland. He participated in the founding of Electric Boat Company, the primary developer and manufacturer of the U.S. & many foreign submarines that were used in WWI, WWII & after. This collection brings together 198 patents by Holland and Electric Boat Company covering all phases and elements of submarine design and operation from 1892 to 1951, when Electric Boat Company became a division of General Dynamics. The patents are arranged in 28 folders by category, such as periscopes and torpedo launching systems. Included also are 6 photographs of Holland's early submarines and later craft manufactured by Electric Boat Company. Included also are 32 foreign patents, most in English. The patents are in pdf file format. Adobe Reader (free download) or equivalent & a PC computer with a CD drive are required to view these patents, which are searchable by patent number & year of issue. This collection is a must for any student of military technology, mechanical engineering or military weapons development. |
