The US Mints changed in mid production from the 95% copper planchet to the zinc planchet with a 2.3% copper coat.  Both Denver and Philadelphia created a small and large date variety.  The Philadelphia mint has small and large dates of both zinc and copper (4 varieties).  The Denver mint has small and large date Zinc and only the large date of copper (3 varieties).  This is how  the seven varieties were created.   Each of these rolls were weight verified to ensure that they are copper or zinc as represented.
