In 1986, Congress authorized the American Eagle series to counter the domination of the American gold market by the South African Krugerrand gold bullion coin and its fractions, authorizing US gold bullion coins in the same sizes, weights, and fineness as the South African issues.

A .999 fine one troy ounce silver bullion coin was added to the developing program. Congress wanted to assure that the silver producing states would fully support the enactment of the program as it made its way through the legislative process into law.  All of the pieces were assigned nominal face values to make them legal tender and thus protected legally by anti-counterfeiting laws.

The Silver American Eagle has been made continuously since l986.  The design has A.A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design on the obverse and the Heraldic Eagle (with breasted shield) design of John Mercanti on the reverse; both designs were adapted from previous U.S. coinage.

The coin offered here is a stunning example of a perfect Proof 70 Deep Cameo displaying full blazing mint brilliance; glittering deeply reflective fields; and sharply contrasting, frost engraved features.  Any perceived flaws in the picture is a result of reflection during photography.  A superb, gem quality coin; and, at the PR-70 grade, it is the best ICG has to offer.
