Bidding Tips For The New User
If you are among the less experienced eBay users, the following thoughts may help you better understand this particular auction format and bidding process. Unlike traditional auctions that continue until the item is won by a determined bidder as the competitors voluntarily drop out, eBay auctions are won by the bidder who has submitted the highest dollar amount before a precise, time certain close. The matter of who's bid is on top at the final tick of the clock, regardless of anyone's desire to continue, has spawned the bidding method referred to as "sniping". Here is an explanation to consider.
"Sniping", a legitimate and common practice of placing a bid in the final moments of an auction, is the strategy of choice for many eBay users attempting to win an item. It is based on the notion that a surprise bid in the final seconds is the best way to win because it places the current high bidder in the off balance position of not being able to submit another, higher bid before time runs out. (Of course, that plan can backfire when the "sniper" finds he or she did not bid enough to overcome the current highest bidder, and the time to try again has run out.) Now, software has been developed to do the bidders sniping automatically, leaving the less informed and prepared even more frustrated for having tried in the first place. (Sound familiar anyone?)
What to do? I would suggest, especially if you are relatively new to this bidding process, that you consider placing your bid now and securing a chance to win. Please be aware that the electronic proxy bidding method places and/or increases your bid only in the amount needed to keep you the high bidder, not a penny more. Only as your maximum bid amount is needed to keep you the current high bidder is the total ever used. No one can see your maximum bid, only the amount that is keeping you the current high bidder. If you simply contemplate the maximum you would pay for this (or any other) item and bid that amount, you will never pay more than what you were willing, and may indeed pay substantially less. Unlike the sniper who places a last second do-or-die bid, if you bid early and find you are outbid anytime during the auction, you can re-evaluate your desire to have the item and bid again in a higher amount or simply pass on the item, knowing it went for a price beyond the value you placed on it.
Avoid frustration and anxiety: Decide your maximum, bid now, and let it go at that.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL !!!
