About The Piece:
The Miller Farm. Smoketown Road. Dunker Church. The Cornfield. The West Woods. The Sunken Road. On September 17, 1862 these names meant only one thing -- death. As inconclusive as the military engagements of Antietam were, their legacy is indisputable. In the weeks that followed, thousands of Amrican families experienced the realities of war as they read five words about this battle: "We regret to inform you .... "
Francis Barnum's series, Antietam: The Bloodiest Day, attempts to sanctify the carnage of the worst day in American history by memorializing the courage and valor of the famous officers and unknown enlisted men who sacrificed everything for their personal beliefs.
In the middle 1800s, heavily traveled, unpaved roads soon became deeply rutted paths which continually eroded and sank below their original grade. Wherever these roads existed, locals called them "The Sunken Road". By sundown on September 17, 1862, the sunken road approaching Sharpsburg, Maryland would have its name changed forever.
On this day, remembered as the bloodiest day in the history of American warfare, more than 25,000 Union and Confederate soldiers would die at the Battle of Antietam. One third of them would fall in the mud of what forever after would be known as "Bloody Lane".
