You are bidding on a beautiful transferware blue platter, circa early 1800's. (first 14 pictures) The platter measures 15 1/2" x 13" wide and is in excellent display condition with a few beauty marks I will try to describe. There is a crack on the back top side of the platter that is very hard to find on the front. I am point to the crow's foot area on the front of the platter in picture 11 and show the reverse side in picture 12 in the same exact area. There are some glaze areas missing along the rim (picture 9) and a stilt mark on the front of the platter that is more like a "pit" mark (just to right of pencil) in picture 10. There are no other chips, cracks, hairlines, fleabites or repairs and the glaze is shiny and bright. I think I am making this sound way worse than it actually is. I think the pictures speak louder than words.
A crisp medium bright blue against a white background depicts the central Romantic theme of a young girl holding a wicker basket along side a gondola with two young men. (picture 3). The details are so finely depicted from this transfer, you can see the little balls hanging from her huge shawl the young maiden is holding in one hand, and the dangles from her broad brimmed hat she is wearing. She is adorable wearing a lovely full skirted dress with the cutest little puffy sleeves! I love the details of the gondola, the lowered sail and riggings and the young man standing so jaunty at the stern. Directly behind this scene, you can see a gazebo behind the standing man and an arched doored building with steps leading up to it. (picture 4) To the left, is a gorgeous huge urn with swags of flowers draping it. (picture 5) It is standing upon a daise and there is a huge rose at the base of it.
Not to be outdone, the rim of this lovely platter is gently scalloped and LUSH roses and magnolias rim the scene. Those of you who decorate with transferware know that shapes and subject matters are so IMPORTANT and this one has them both. What a wonderful piece to add to your Staffordshire collection. Perfect for the English cottage, Paris Apartment, garden or shabby chic decor.
