This carved wooden shield from the southern Philippines is incised with geometric designs and enhanced with black and white paint. It is fringed with coarse, dark brown animal hair. It measures 39" long x 12" wide at the widest part.
A kind ebayer informs me that this is an old shield of the Bagobo people. I've now seen pictures of similar shields with that identification. (I previously listed it as African. My father purchased it about forty years ago from an antique dealer who specialized in African and Asian artifacts but he no longer remembers what he learned at the time).
It's in overall good condition considering its age, except for a sizeable chip off one corner -- an unfortunate result of one of my father's many moves. It looks like it is missing horizontal support pieces at the top and bottom. It shows some signs of wear around the edges and some of the animal hair is missing (as well as some animal missing their hair).
