19th Century Hand Fan, Gauze, Silk, Mother of Pearl, Bone and Spangles, Lgn. (of guards) 7 3/8"; When open tip of guard to tip of guard: 14". Guards are Mother of Pearl, as are the ribs- but ribs change to bone at shoulder. Leaf is guaze w/ 4 painted panels. Smaller panels at ends portray follies- one has a fountain- the other a windmill. The two center panels are a little larger- one has a man and the other a lady with doves. The surrounding guaze is lavishly decorated with spangles- the hand sewing is evident on the verso side. The main colors are light blues- the panel with the man is signed Bayard. The loop is plain with a mother of pearl washer. Condition: Various imperfections- 2 tears along folds to guaze (see pic of man for example)- one rib has a disconnect between mother of pearl and bone at shoulder- not a break- but does need repairing. There is wear/ loose threads along top- faces up well. We have been told that this fan may be earlier then stated. This is not our area of expertise so you be the final judge. This fan would add to any antique fan collection- I wonder if the Bayard is Emille Bayard??? You be the final judge! Email with any questions or information. Buyer pays S/H/I. Good Luck! |
