LATE 19THC. MANDARIN SEMI-FORMAL LADIES ROBE WITH PHOENIX BIRDS AND 5 TOED DRAGONS
In a stunning dark blue silk damask lavishly embroidered thruout in expertly executed hand stitches, including white silk satin stitches. With toggle closures in black silk, binding edges and sleeves also abundantly embroidered, see images, wide sleeves and mandarin closure with side vents. The robe fastens diagonally across the upper chest and down the right hand seam with brass ball buttons and silk braid loops. Lined in blue colored silk that is in very good condition. Made in China around 1860, during the late Qing dynasty. In excellent condition no staining or dye variations, one very small hole and a very small spot as seen in pictures. The Robe is in overall nice Antique condition, with one very small hole, no stains or any other condition issues. Embroidery in remarkable condition, slight fray one here and one there, and missing two toggle buttons. The principle motif are five-clawed dragon that appears five times. One dragons is below the the neck, two adorn the front of the skirt with the Phoenix bird and two on the back. Other embroidered motifs cover the body of the robe, including clouds around the dragon moifs, flowers and bats, which represent happiness.
Measures 61" from sleeve tip to sleeve tip and measures 49" long. A great robe worthy of one's collection.
