 This wonderful early 19th Century Cribbage Board was made by Napoleonic Prisoners of War. Prisoners were encouraged to make boxes and other objects in order to occupy their time in a productive manner and were allowed to sell these at weekly markets.The money earned was often used to purchase personal articles, as well as small pieces of metal, nails, and wire that could be used by a talented craftsman to carve intricate designs on pieces of bone which were obtained from the kitchens and stained with vegetable dyes.This Cribbage board is made from a curved piece of Bone in the shape of a country style bench of that period. It has pierced holes and is decorated with a geometric pattern of circles dyed Red & Green. It stands on 4 short legs,there is a box with a sliding lid on the underside which holds 4 ringed bone pegs. It is unusual to find a board this shape as they are usually made as Boxes. The Cribbage board is in good condition, I am not sure if the pegs are original or if they have been replaced, I am sure that the legs have been refixed in the past. Please note there are reflections on the photos.
