Scientific Name: Styrax Benzoin, Styraceae Family

AKA: Siam Benzoin, Sumatra Benzoin, Gum Benjamin, Gum Benzion
Parts Used: Resin, for Gum
Active Compounds: Benzoic acid of up to 38%, vanillin, aromatic liquid. Traces of ash and soluble in alcohol. Sumatra Benzoin has 18% benzoic acid and 20% cinnamic acid with 1% vanillin, styrol, styracin, phenyl-prophyl cinnamate and benzaldehyde.

Background: Benzoin Gum was originally burned as incense, it was later utilized throughout history as a wound treatment and for various skin infections. 

Applications: Antiseptic/Inhalant

Antiseptic: Benzoin Gum is used to treat wounds and skin disease, such as Athlete's foot.  Also used as an antiseptic for urinary infections.

Inhalant: Used to help breathing difficulties such as bronchitis in addition to treating laryngitis. 

Description:
Benzoin Gum is grown in Southeast Asia, the tree grows to 28 feet with pointed leaves and clusters of white flowers. The resin is formed when when the tree, at least 7 years old, is axed and after a period of time the tree yields the liquid Benzoin. After it has run for a time, the tree is cut down and gutted for the remaining resin. 

Dosage:
Apply Benzoin Gum topically for infections or wounds and ingest for internal conditions.

Safety:
There are no known warnings for Benzoin Gum usage.
