The item for sale is a First Edition of the Modern Classic, Native Son, by Richard Wright. This book is a modern literary classic, printed in 1940, and can be savored on a variety of levels: Its tale begins with a detective-theme that has mounting suspense when a series of unexpected events accelerate the momentum beyond the characters' control; this book is one of the first great novels that addressed the reality of life for a "Negro" in America (as it was known during that era); and it is a complicated social criticism which does not rant or rave over the injustices of American life but in an understated approach is akin to the Grapes of Wrath in describing the life of people who have no chance given the time and world that they inhabit. The condition of the book is VG+ with no tears, discolorations, or nameplates/signatures, and the Dust Jacket is in VG shape with wear at the edges but with an interesting illustrated cover. This copy was published by Harper & Brothers in 1940 as First Edition, but it is a later printing in that year (with the initials B-P on the copyright page). This is a great edition to a modern literature collection; a Black Americana collection; or a simple collection of fiction, or for any reader of modern literature it is a great addition to the bookshelf.
