Synopsis
Though primarily known as a science fiction author, Bova has also written a number of non-fiction scientific texts. THE STORY OF LIGHT is closer to the latter, but it approaches its subject, that of the influence of light on human development (particularly, social development), in a relaxed and non-scholarly manner.

A hero to hard-core sf fans, Bova here aims to widen his audience to include readers of nonfiction science. Bova points out hundreds of subjects touching on light's physics, its functions in biology, its applications in art and technology, and its role in astronomy. Given that, with a few exceptions (Bova focuses at length on lasers), every discrete subject receives but a few paragraphs of World Book-depth treatment, general-interest readers may be put off by the breadth and topical hop scotching of the book. On the other hand, Bova writes that he organized the book to encourage browsing, assuming his target readership would be curious about light but bereft of any appreciation of what light is, how it behaves, and the history of the discoveries of its properties. Bova competently covers those basics, and to sustain the interest of the liberal-arts crowd, he sprinkles his narrative with interesting tidbits, such as literary excerpts or a discussion of the history of theatrical lighting. The author's name will draw his fans, but his book also has potential crossover appeal.
