The item for sale is an early edition of a great piece of Americana, "Done in The Open" , an oversized Folio of myriad illustrations of the American West by Frederick Remington.  This book contains poems written by Owen Wister and other authors about the American West (e.g., ranching, sheep herding, soldiers, Native Americans, environment/wildlife) and 80+ illustrations by Remington.   The illustrations in this book were printed by PF Collier from 1898 through 1902, and were then collected for the first time in this book, published in 1903, making this book a "First thus."  It contains one color plate, more than 50 full page illustrations (23" wide and 12" high) and more than 40 half page illustrations (usually to introduce a particular person or event: "The Rancher"; The "Chief"; "Sheepherding"  To give you an example, the poem, "The Last Shot" reads:

"Oh yes, his feat is a triumph, We all have done the same, We all have blasted the spark of life, To ashes with powdered-flame.  But as for the antlered carcass, I should feel if I were he, the Kodak after the Winchester, Adds insult to Injury."  Remington's illustration of this poem was to picture two men in the wilderness who have shot a large moose, and they are holding his head as a tenderfoot with a camera takes their picture.  Remington captures the "tongue-in-cheek" character of the poem in his illustration. The irony of the words coupled with the character of Remington's illustrations create a memorable work of Americana.  The condition of this book is excellent with no writing, foxing, or tears. However, the front hinge is worn (last picture above),  but remains tight, with no loose pages.  In addition, the edges of the cover are likewise worn and rubbed.  It certainly reflects the fact that it is over 100 years old.  Yet the illustrations are amazing in their ability to capture a mood. Thanks for Looking!
