Publisher's Note
In "The Last Hawk", Asaro tells the story of Kelwin, a seasoned fighter pilot and heir to the throne, whose disabled spacecraft crash-lands on a proscribed world. The women who rule it immediately detain him to prevent their incorporation into the empire and keep him as honored guest and prisoner. It takes him years to escape, years of pain and pleasure, love and learning, for this world changes him and so changes the future of the galactic empire.
The Last Hawk is Catherine Asaro's third novel of the Skolian Empire, an interstellar civilization spanning hundreds of worlds and thousands of years. Each book approaches the Empire and a member of the ruling family from a different angle, or at a different moment in future history. Now, in The Last Hawk, Asaro tells the tale of the lost heir to the Empire. Fleeing the heat of battle in a wounded spacecraft, Kelric crash-lands on a proscribed planet where a matriarchy rules through the medium of a complex game. The women in power help to heal him, but destroy his ship and determine that he can never leave - for his knowledge of their world, if revealed to the Empire, would cause the rapid fall of their civilization. And so his rescue turns into an imprisonment of years, decades, a time in which he finds love and a challenging place in the universal game.

Industry reviews
In 2258 A.D., Kelric, a fighter pilot, crashes on Coba, an off-limits planet. He discovers a thriving civilization headed by women managers of 12 estates who want to keep their world hidden and free of domination by the Skolian empire. Choosing to spare his life, they detain Kelric as both honored concubine and prisoner for 20 years. As he is traded or sold to different estates, his knowledge of the physics-based quis dice game that governs Coba increases his value and power. Set in the same universe as Primary Inversion (LJ 2/15/95) and Catch the Lightning (LJ 11/15/96), this intriguing novel combines hard speculative science (Asaro is a physicist) with romantic adventure. Like the other two novels in the Skolian empire saga, it can stand alone. Recommended for larger sf collections.
Moore

In her third novel set in the embattled Skolian Empire, Asaro (Catch the Lightning) has settled into a smoothly absorbing space-opera formula that mixes high-tech gimmickry with galactic politics and plenty of romance. Kelric, heir to the Imperial throne, is stranded on the restricted planet Coba after he and his ship are badly damaged. The matriarchal society he finds himself in abhors killing, but, justifiably fearing the consequent loss of its autonomy, is unwilling to return him to his space-faring people. So, though the technology Kelric carries embedded in his body threatens to destroy him, he is held captive and treated as a pawn of planetary politics. Shuttled between various strong, ruling women, he becomes slave, lover, servant and savant as his special skills give him talents and abilities that threaten to unmake a world and a people he comes to love. The most original and intriguing aspect of the novel is the game of Quis, a mathematical model for interpersonal relationships that is played with rainbow-colored dice. Less touchy-feely than Asaro's first novel, this one packs in lots of action along with its many romantic interludes and diversions into speculative genetics. (Nov.)

International shipping details by country

Shipping History:

We have shipped well over 3,000 packages (containing more than 5,700 items), with more than 500 of those packages going to international destinations, since we started selling on in 2002 (Click here to see where we've shipped). As of September 16, 2009, we have had only five packages reported as lost, three to U.S. destinations and two to international destinations (Australia and Spain - destinations we have also shippped to successfully many times). We have not had a report of a book damaged in transit since shortly after we started selling (it took us a couple of damaged shipments to learn not to pack books in boxes that were too tight a fit).

California Sales Tax

Items shipped to addresses outside California are not subject to sales tax.

Unless you are a reseller with a valid California Seller's Permit buying this item to resell, we are required by California law to collect sales tax for all items shipped to or delivered to addresses in California or picked up from our location.

The checkout system cannot handle the complexities of sales tax in California where the sales tax rate varies by where the item is being delivered. We have setup the shipping calculator to charge sales tax at 9.5% for those who do not want to wait for us to invoice you. If you wait for our invoice, we will adjust the sales tax to be correct for the location you say we will be shipping to.

California resellers need to provide us with your permit number before we can remove the sales tax from your invoice.
