Up for auction today is set of 2 handmade beautiful antique lace bonnet. These were both found together made by Marry Alden Hupper in the late 1880's.
These features beautiful handmade laces, ribbons and adornments.
These are very delicate after 130 years of storage, the black one more than the cream one.
These are loaded with different laces, chantuilly, valenciennes, tambour and net laces. Ribbons covering wire etc. Lovely period pieces.
Please read the history of the family these bonnets belonged to below.
Last week I found this collection in a simple leather suitcase put together by a woman named Mary Alden Hupper on
Sept. 11th 1927. She was approx. 70 years old at the time. In the collection are simple sentimental items common of a middle class woman in the late 1800's. The picture of the trunk shows the items as they were found. I have each items listed in separate auctions this week.
I was incredibly touched by this particular woman and the things she had written in the notes as well as in her choice of things to save in this trunk; the items themselves speak of her life and the sentimental journey she must have been going through that day in September so long ago
Her husband Joel H. Hupper was part of a cousin’s lobster fishing company in
Martinsville
ME. I found record online where he was mentioned in the Samuel Whatt collection as having a vessel "abandoned at sea 1896 Oct on passage from
West Indes to
Portland, Me"
As for Mary herself she wrote a little note along with some embroidered trim that read,
”Embroidery done by my Aunt Nancy Adeline Alden who was born in 1814 and died when she was away at boarding school. It was worked on the bottom of a dress. The waist was low necked and of Grecian style. The sleeves were ? mutt? leg style. -Mary Alden Hupper
Sept. 11 1927."
And with the christening gown,
"Ella's dress made by Mother 1879."
It's so easy to forget women like Nancy and Mary and Ella here on eBay. They lived in a world you and I cannot imagine and yet here we hold the lace they made, the stockings they walked in and the dresses they were christened in. Let's not forget them when we buy these textiles. Let's appreciate their lives as they obviously hoped someone would.
Take a look at the other auctions I have listed today and see the other items Mary saved, even if you peek just for fun and appreciation.
