Tupac Shakur a.k.a. Lesane Parish Crooks (which was his real name 'till the panthers changed it) was born in NYC (June 16, 1971) to Afeni Shakur, a member of the Black Panther Party who was pregnant with him while in jail on bombing charges. She beat the charges and was released one month before Tupac was born. Some of his aliases include 2Pac, Pac, and Makaveli. The aliases 'Tupac Amaru' and 'Shakur' mean Shining Serpent in Quechua and Thankful to God in Arabic. 2Pac became the unlikely martyr of gangsta rap and a tragic symbol of lifestyle in black urban America. He started out as a second-string rapper and dancer for Digital Underground. His profile rose substantially, based as much on his run-ins with the law as his music. By 1994, 2Pac rivaled Snoop Dogg as the most controversial figure in rap, spending as much time in prison as he did in the recording studio. However, his music was filled with blunt and explicit lyrics and earned criticism from moral watchdogs, and Vice President Dan Quayle attacked his albums while he was campaigning for re-election. A couple of high profile incidents landed him in prison, and he became the first artist to enjoy a number one record while serving a prison sentence. Death Row Records arranged for parole and posted a bond of $1.4 million. After "California Love," a huge single, Shakur was beginning to tire of hip-hop and started to concentrate on an acting career. On September 7, 1996, Tupac was shot repeatedly in Las Vegas following a Mike Tyson fight and died six days later, Friday, September 13. Numerous theories continue to surround Tupac's murder, but it remains unsolved to this day.
