2 RP/WWI War Dept. Photo/Gen. Pershing & Menoher/Other
You are bidding on these 2 WWI War Department real photos featuring Generals Pershing, Menoher and others. General John J. Pershing was an officer in the U.S. Army and the only person to be promoted in his own lifetime to the highest rank held in the Army, General of the Armies. General Menoher was also a U.S. Army General, and following WWI, he became Director of the Air Service. He had a conflict with his top deputy, Colonel William Mitchell, and Gen. Menoher requested an assignment with troops. He then took command of the Hawaiian division of the U.S. Army (Hawaiian Department) from 1924-1925. Generals Pershing and Menoher were friends and both graduated from West Point in 1886.
The first of these two photos measures 7 5/8" by 9 5/8". The photo features many different officers standing in front of a building with the number "4" painted on the side. There are also several civilian men and women standing by the building. In the center of the photo, the woman seated behind the fence is holding a box style camera in her lap. In the bottom right corner of the front of the photo, it states, "8879AS." Attached to the back of the photo, there is a typewritten paragraph of information. It states, "Two generals -- It is easy enough to recognize General Pershing, but the business-like man in flying togs talking to him is Major General Charles T. Menoher, Chief of the Air Service, just returning after his flight to greet the Alaskan flyers, Bolling Field, Washington, D.C." Also on the back of the photo, there is an ink stamp which states, "WAR DEPARTMENT The Adjutant General's Office Authorized." There is also a signature within the ink stamp. There are no rips or tears in this photo. There is a dogear bend/crease in the bottom right corner of the photo, a small dogear bend in the bottom left corner of the photo, and there are some slight crease marks along the top edge. This photo is in excellent condition.
The second photo measures 3 1/2" by 5 7/8". It features General "Black Jack" Pershing standing with another man. On the bottom of the front of the photo it states, "Velox Print made by The Robert Dempster Co. Omaha, Nebraska." Written on the back of the photo, in pencil, it states, "Gen. "Black Jack" Pershing." There is no other identification on this photo as to where or when it was taken. There is a dogear tear in the bottom left corner of the photo, and the piece has toen completely away. The tear is contained entirely in the border of the photo, and does not effect the content of the photo. There are also small dogear bends in the other 3 corners. There is some slight oxidation on the front of the photo. Please see photos.
These photos were part of my grandfather's extensive collection of real photos of the military and real photos of women with cameras. These photos would make an excellent addition to any collection of real photos!!
