Robert Barrie and his 1917 Yachting Book

________________________________________

Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt III:

Cornelius Vanderbilt III (born 1873 – died 1942) was an American military officer, inventor, engineer, and yachtsman.  He was a member of the famous New York Vanderbilt family.

He and his wife Grace Wilson Vanderbilt (born 1870 - died 1953) lived in a 3-story brownstone mansion on New York's Fifth Avenue.  This house was given to Cornelius Vanderbilt III by his uncle George Washington Vanderbilt.  This Vanderbilt letterhead has that 5th Avenue address.

In 1901, Cornelius Vanderbilt III was made a Second Lieutenant in the Twelfth Infantry Regiment of the New York National Guard.

In 1910, he piloted his yacht to victory in the New York Yacht Club's race for the "King Edward VII Cup. In 1940, he sold this Fifth Avenue mansion in New York City to members of the Astor family.

Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt III was the queen of America's high society during that era.

From a Scrapbook Assembled by Publisher Robert Barrie of Philadelphia:

This is a page from a scrapbook assembled by Philadelphia publisher Robert Barrie, who authored this yachting book titled "My Log."  The complete text of that book is readable online in Google Books.

Note: I recently offered on Ebay another scrapbook by Robert Barrie, about yachting. I sold that yaching scrapbook complete as I purchased it. The items I offer here comes from a second Robert Barrie scrapbook, whose pages I am selling individually, because of the diversity of items in this second scrapbook. I purchased these scrapbooks at an estate auction here in Pennsylvania.

This Robert Barrie was the son of publisher George Barrie, a Scottish-American immigrant who founded the Philadelphia publishing house Barrie and Sons. George Barrie was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Here in Philadelphia, George Barrie was first employed by the publisher J. B. Lippincott, before starting his own publishing company in 1873, with the assistance of his sons, this Robert Barrie and George Barrie Jr.

The Barrie publishing house was very successful, and was internationally known as a publisher of fine art works, prints, and books. The Barrie publisher received medals at all the leading exhibitions, including the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, the 1889 expo in Paris, in 1893 at Chicago, and in 1900 at Paris.

Condition:  Very Nice Condition.  Items are clean, with no foxing or dampstains.  The lower third of the Vanderbilt letter is partially glued to the scrapbook page.  The Vanderbilt letter has some pencilled numbers on the upper right corner.  Half of the "New York Evening Post" letter is glued to the scrapbook page.  The page has 3 holes where it was fastened into the ring-binder scrapbook.
