2 Vintage Native Stone Adze Hand Axe Papua New Guinea

This auction is for 2 native hand axes, also known as ADZE.  These are hand made from wood with a heavy stone head attached by a wrap of reed or palm.  The stone is Nephrite (Jade), it has been hand knapped or carved to make a sharpened edge for cutting or digging.  I am told that these were also used by the natives as weapons.  The larger of the two measures 22” tall with the section holding the stone head measuring 17”.  The smaller one measures 22” with the head section measuring 14”.   both were made and used by the natives on the west part of New Guinea, an area known as Irian Jaya.  I’m not sure of the age but these were collected on one of several trips during the 1960’s.  This is part of a large collection that I bought from the estate of a world traveler.  His family told me that his work had taken him on several trips to New Guinea over a number of years and he had collected lots of interesting native artifacts.  See my other auctions for more.  There are way too many things to put up for auction all at once so I will be offering them for sale on Ebay over the next few weeks so check back from time to time.
