LARGE METTLACH CAMEO STONEWARE PLAQUE c. 1900 GERMANY
This magnificent, classic, stoneware cameo plaque by Mettlach, is depicting a classical scene of a man astride a mythical sea bird with two attending nymphs. The plaque has a soft blue backround and the scene depicted in white is done in relief and with great detail. The diameter of the plaque measures 20 1/2 inches and is in excellent condition, no chips or cracks. Artist signed (J Stahl) and numbered 7048 (see the enclosed picture).
The artist, Johann Baptist Stahl (1860-1932), has been mentioned as active at Mettlach during the period 1895 to 1920 and was designated as a modeler of phanolith/cameo stoneware.
