The simplest way to boost your FM handheld power. Run your handheld on minimum power to stretch battery life. Makes a nice booster for your synthesizer / exciter too. Heatsink is required. Operates in Class 'C' mode. Actual output depends on input power, frequency and voltage. Do not exceed the 400 mW maximum input power. Check the datasheet (click here) charts for specifics.

Need an Attenuator?

If you have a handheld (exciter) with a fixed output in excess of 400 mW, you must use a 50 Ω attenuator to reduce the input power to a safe level.

Example: Handheld is 4 Watts (P1 = 4000 mW). You want to drop it to a safe 300 mW (P2).

Calculate the attenuation needed in dB with the formula dB=(10)*log(P1/P2). You will need an 11.25 dB attenuator.

Next, use this link: Pi/T Attenuator Pad Resistance Calculator (click here). Enter 11.25 and 50 Ohms to get the resistor values for both the 'T' and 'Pi' pad configurations.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to use NON-inductive resistors with enough power capability.

200 mW Input at 148 MHz and 13.5 Volts, will produce 18 Watts Output.


Layout and construction of a basic amplifier is very simple.

Use an etch-resist pen to layout the PCB and mount it all to your heatsink.

Select your connectors or terminate directly with 50 Ω coax cables.


Info: Plans for a bi-directional T/R switch design for this 'H2' style package are featured in recent editions of "The ARRL Handbook for Radio Amateurs". From their 2000/1/2 editions, a PCB can be made from this template (click here). Alternatively, some discrete component circuit (click here) designs can be modified to incorporate the M57719N. Other plans can be found on the internet. One customer reported using this amp in his Icom IC-3200.

The M57719N uses the same H2 package as the S-AV7 / S-AV17 and is wired similarly. But specifications do vary. Each model has it's own performance advantages. Compare the datasheets to determine if substitution is appropriate in your application.
