in 2004 the georg jensen silver smithy could celebrate a centenary
georg jensen opened his first work shop in copenhagen in 1904
the centenary was celebrated with a modern collection by torun bulow-hube
and a classic collection inspired by georg jensen himself with jewelry designs
made from his first design # 1
here i present a pair of sterling silver cuff links with an oval cabochon black onyx
the centenary cuff links - a treasure for the future
designed by Georg Jensen himself in 1904
the stone measures approx. 10 by 7 mm. = 3/8 by 1/4 inch
the front of a cuff links measures approx. 22 by 17 mm. = 7/8 by 11/16 inch
this item was a collection sample in a very good condition with a fine patina

georg jensen (1866-1935) is both a name and a concept
he revitalized the special craft of the silversmith through his inspiration from the
arts & crafts movement and the refined art nouveau style
he treated the material with great respect and unique visions
after opening his workshop in copenhagen in 1904, jensen created a sensation
with his jewelry and silver works
he gave free reign to his imagination through extended use of flowers and fruits
and stones such as golden amber, blue lapis and red coral
also he was the first to systematically use oxidation for aesthetic effect
he created deep soft shades on the surface of the silver which turned the shiny
silver into a mellow grey with black shadows in the design hollows
after a while he was able to make larger investments in the costly silver and began to
hammer out larger pieces of hollow ware such as jugs, dishes and and candle holders
when georg jensen died in 1935 his small workshop had developed into a
worldwide company where inspired, artistic and talented craftsmen have since
continued to develop the jensen tradition
jensen's ideas survived in new forms through these artists, some of whom he had
trained himself, and who have since trained new generations of silver designers
jensen left behind a company with a viable tradition where craftsmen and artists treasure his memory through mutual respect and progressive ideas
