| The Florida Gators and head coach Urban Meyer, a former graduate assistant at Ohio State, spoiled the top-ranked Buckeyes' bid for a perfect season as the underdog Gators, ranked second entering the game, captured Florida's second football crown with a convincing 41-14 victory in the 2007 Tostitos National Championship. The game started in stunning fashion as Ohio State's Ted Ginn, Jr. returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. On their ensuing drive, offensive player-of-the-game Chris Leak led Gators to a touchdown and Florida never looked back. The speedy Gator defense stuffed Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith and the Ohio State's offense, sacking Smith five times, causing two turnovers and holding the Buckeyes to a BCS-record-low 86 yards of total offense. The two-quarterback Florida offense, led by Leak and Tim Tebow, scored on six of its first seven possessions. The Gators owned a 34-14 halftime lead.
