After these dollar coins were struck with the obverse and reverse dies, they were sent to another area on the Mint floor to be run through the edge lettering machine prior to being moved to the shipping room. A bin of perhaps 100,000 coins missed going through the edge lettering machine! oops!

Total PCGS certified population is reported to be: About 20,000 Error dollars.

Certified in MS64 condition: About 6,200

That averages out to about 124 coins per state of the fifty UNITED STATES. Not many to go around is it?  

This coin was found in a Fed wrapped roll shipped to the Jacksonville, Florida Federal Reserve district. The GEORGE WASHINGTON missing edge lettering ERROR DOLLAR were released on February 17TH. By now most have been recovered from the banking system.
