2008 Menghai "Five Colored Peacock" Raw Pu-erh tea set

Five famous tea mountains, five tea cakes

Menghai tea factory has released this Peacock series of single-estate tea mountains since 2001.  They represent some of Menghai Tea Factory's most sought after teas and are produced in very limited quantities. Only in the years 2005, 2006 and 2008 were all 5 tea mountains represented.

Bulang Mountain

Bulang Mountain is the only ethnic Bulang township in China.  The Bulang people are descended from the Pu, a minority group of ancient China.  They were the first people to cultivate, process, and drink tea.  The tea growing area is located in Menghai county of Yunnan province's Xishuangbanna prefecture and lies at an average altitude of 1700 meters above sea level.  The Bulang Mountain area is one of the most prominent ancient tea growing areas in Xishuangbanna.  It contains the much-celebrated Banzhang Tea Mountain and has upwards of 10,000mu (1mu=1/6acre) of ancient cultivated tea gardens.  The tea trees grow among lush virgin tropical rainforest with year-round fog and mist.  The leaves from these trees have a very distinctive quality.   Bulang Peacock tea is a 400g fresh Pu-erh cake.  Its leaves and buds are extremely plump and fleshy and are covered in fine white hair.  They are a blackish green color with a rich glossiness. nbsp; The leaves have a thick, but soft, character and possess a high degree of tenderness.  The brewed tea is a transparent golden yellow color. This Bulang Peacock tea is distinguished by its flavor, which is concentrated, strong, and aggressive.  It is filled with chaqi, but bitterness and astringency are balanced.  It quickly dissolves in the mouth leaving a rich kougan and a long, pleasant aftertaste.

Menghai

Menghai Menghai County (formerly Fohai County) is located in Xishuangbanna Prefecture. It is the original and core production area of Pu-erh tea and is the location of the Menghai Tea Factory. The label Menghai Ancient Tea Mountain generally refers to Menghun, Mengzhe, and Hekai tea mountains, which are located in the vicinity of the town of Menghai. The Menghai mountain area is one of Xishuangbanna's best preserved and largest ancient tea mountain growing areas. This area has a high altitude, high level of plant cover, and a warm climate with ample sunshine. It contains mostly yellow-brown soil. These conditions are extremely suitable for growing tea. Menghai tea trees are primarily of the Menghai large-leaf variety. The Menghai large-leaf variety is a national level superior tea tree variety. The trees are tall and large. They can grow to heights of over a dozen meters under natural conditions. Menghai Peacock tea is a 400 gram fresh Pu-erh cake. Strips of tea are tightly and evenly distributed. The cakes are dark green with marked fine hair and a rich glossiness. The cakes have a uniform round and moist appearance. The brewed tea is a transparent golden yellow color. Its flavor is rich, mellow, and refreshing. The tea possesses distinct layers of flavor that change considerably as it is brewed. It has a balanced kougan and a pure, subtle fragrance. The leaves are soft and fleshy with a high degree of tenderness.

Bada Mountain

Bada Tea Mountain is one of the oldest tea mountains. Among this vast sea of tropical rainforest is an abundant and precious natural resource of tea tree varieties. It contains clusters of wild tea trees as well as ancient gardens of cultivated tea trees. Among them, a large wild tea tree over 1700 years old has been discovered growing on Bada's Dahei Mountain. This is the world famous "Bada King of Tea Trees." It has become Bada tea growing area's unique natural attraction and is a living fossil for research into the origin of tea. Bada Peacock tea is a 400g fresh Pu-erh cake. Strips of tea are tightly and evenly distributed. The leaves and buds are plump, strong, and tender. The cakes are dark green with marked fine hair. Brewed tea is bright yellow with a mellow, sweet, and refreshing flavor. It is stimulating and mouth-watering. The flavor is long-lasting with a delicate fragrance. Its aroma fills the mouth.

Mengsong Mountain

Mengsong has one of the highest concentrations of ancient tea gardens in Menghai County. The Mengsong tea growing area lies at a high altitude. The tallest peak in Xishuangbanna, Huazhu Liangzi, is located near the tea growing area at an altitude of 2429 meters. It is known as the roof of Xishuangbanna. Mengsong benefits from its high altitude, heavy forest cover, and often misty weather. It is truly a case of "high, misty mountains produce fine tea." Mengsong area tea has a unique flavor and strong aroma. Mengsong Peacock tea is a 400g fresh Pu-erh cake. The buds and leaves are large and fleshy. The leaves have a thick, but soft, character. The tender buds are a yellowish green. They possess a high amount of fine fuzz. They are highly tender and have a glossy appearance. The flavor is sweet, mellow, and refreshing. The fragrance is clean, pure, and long-lasting. It has a unique and strong appeal.

Nannuo Mountain

Nannuo means "bamboo paste" in the Dai language. During ancient times, Nannuo Mountain was primarily inhabited by ethnic Hani people. When they had too many bamboo shoots to eat, they made the leftovers into a paste. This paste was presented to the village chieftains every year. The mountain was subsequently named Nannuo Mountain. It is located in the eastern portion of Menghai County of Yunnan Province's Xishuangbanna Prefecture. It has an average elevation of 1400 meters above sea level. The entire mountain is covered in shaded forests of green bamboo and other trees. Ecological conditions are excellent. Nannuo Mountain tea trees are large-leaf arbor-type. Nannuo Mountain is famous in China and abroad as the home of the "King of Tea Tree," a human cultivated 800+ year old tree. Fine tea tree varieties and superior natural conditions produce outstanding Nannuo Mountain tea products. Nannuo Mountain Peacock tea is a 400g fresh Pu-erh cake. It possesses a green, glossy luster and has leaves and buds that are plump, strong, and tender. The strips of tea unfold with prominent fine hair. When brewed, the tea liquor is a bright golden yellow with a strong, but mellow and refreshing flavor. It has a sharp kougan (feeling in the mouth) and stimulates salivation. The tea has strong and distinctive aroma.

Pu-erh tea brewing is not so different from oolong teas. You want the water as hot as possible when you pour it into the pot. If you are going to use yixing, I would dedicate one pot for ripe pu-erh and another for raw. Up to you.

With pu-erhs I typically wash the leaves twice for period of about 20 seconds each time. The third infusion is to be drank. The first two infusions wash the leaves and prime them, use the tea water to wash the cups. The third and fourth infusions don't require long infusions times at all (20 seconds or less).

Pay attention to the taste and the infused liquor of the tea through succesive infusions, as the leaves "give it up" you will want to extend infusion times to get more out of the leaves. Most Pu-erhs can be infused anywhere between 10 and 20 times.

When prying leaves from a cake or brick, try to remove layer by layer and avoid breaking the tea leaves too much, broken up leaves when brewed will become bitter.

Another factor worth mentioning that will affect the outcome of your brew is how much tea you decide to use. Although many people measure weight (tea) versus volume (water), I prefer an intuitive approach, filling the the tea pot or gaiwan to about a quarter of its volume with leaves.

If you prefer a tea weight to water ration I would recommend 6 grams per 100ml of water.

Notice how tightly compressed Pu-erhs will expand more when infused than those that are less tightly compressed. Pay attention to the gradual expansion of the leaves and the flavor that comes out of them.

Try “tweaking” the different variables I’ve mentioned and pay attention to the result, this is part of the enjoyment of discovering Pu-erh!
