2009 AUSTRALIA FELIX MENDELSSOHN 1 OZ SILVER PROOF

*** The Perth Mint of Australia has released the first of a five coin series celebrating the Romantic-era composers, the Felix Mendelssohn 1oz Silver Proof Coin. Felix Mendelssohn was born in 1809 and within the first few years of his life was already recognized as musically gifted. In fact, well known German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe would remark on his similarity to another child prodigy he had known years before, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This comparison was not unfounded, and would surface again and again.

*** Many of his works are appreciated and performed today, but best known by most is probably the incidental music he wrote for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Included as part of that collection is the Wedding March, used in thousands of matrimonial ceremonies around the world each year as a recessional piece.*** The reverse portrays Mendelssohn facing a large treble clef. The inscription ‘Felix Mendelssohn 1809 – 1847′ and the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark are also shown. As legal tender of the country of Tuvalu, the obverse contains Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. "Queen Elizabeth II", "1 Dollar", "Tuvalu" and "2009" are present as well.
