The Moon's diameter is slightly more than a quarter that of the Earth. The Moon orbits around the Earth every 27.3 days. The gravitational pull of the Moon is largely responsible for ocean tides on Earth. The first man-made object to escape the Earth's gravity and pass near the Moon was the Luna 1, by the former Soviet Union. The first man-made object to impact the Moon was Luna 2. The first photographs of the far side of the Moon were made by Luna 3. All of these events occurred in 1959. Luna 9 was the first spacecraft to make a successful lunar soft landing, and Luna 10 was the first unmanned vehicle to orbit the Moon, both in 1966. The United States is the only nation that has made manned flights to the Moon, in the Apollo program, resulting in six landings between 1969 and 1972.
