If you are interested in metal working or steam engines, I have got a treat for you. I have a growing interest myself and this has led me to search for documentation that is complete and that I could afford. I came across these three books and found a gold mine. I can spend the rest of my life trying to learn and perfect the lessons contained in these 1743 pages.
Included are three classic books.
The first, a two volume set,
Modern Machine Shop Practice. This is a machinist's guide published in 1888 detailing every operation you can imagine in a machine shop. It covers everything from milling, drilling, shaping, grinding, lathe turning, casting, hardening, threading, and even has sections on building steam engines, which is what brought me to the book in the first place. If you have started your journey in the world of metal working, you know that for the most part, the process hasn't changed in the last 150 years, only the tolerances! I have looked at current machinist guides to learn from and I just haven't found this kind of completeness. This book was scanned from the original at 600 DPI so it can be very accurately printed if you care to (Kinko's will print this double sided and bind it - I used the ring binding to make flipping through pages easier in the shop). These two volumes contain 963 pages with over 3400 engravings. Every step is beautifully illustrated!
Next on this list is
The Advanced Machinist. Another great book published by Theo. Audel & Company in 1903. What differentiated this from
Modern Machine Shop Practice is that it was written as a text book rather than an all encompasing reference book. It's a great way to learn because you can follow the lessons and reference
Modern Machine Shop Practice. This book is 350 pages with tons of illustrations.
Then there's
A Chatechism of the Steam Engine. This is a really cool book if you are interested in steam engines. It covers everything you want to know about steam engines. You'll find stuff on boilers, pumps, steam expansion, piping, and just about anything else related to the steam engine. It has an interesting format, question and answer. For example, you'll have a question about how to regulate pressure and then a detailed answer complete with necessary formulas, a full description, and a illustrations. I have found this to be a really good book to use to learn about all of the mechanisms and workings of a steam engine. Having the other two books as technical references really adds to what you get out of this book. It is 430 pages and was published in 1868, during the prime of the steam engine!
I'm also tossing a couple of documents in that I have found to be interesting. One is
Cooper Agricultural Steam Engines, a collection of agricultural steam engines and their history. It's a lot of fun for live steam engine enthusiasts and farm implement enthusiasts. Being from Texas, I had to include
Reciprocating Steam Engines - USS Texas. This is a study of the power plant on the USS Texas, which can be toured outside of Houston, Texas!
All three of the books are copyright free so feel free to share them with your friends or print them completed or in sections. They should offer these in Home Shop Machinist, Live Steam, or The Machinist's Workshop but they don't. I'm including a copy of the free Adobe Acrobat reader for Windows and Macintosh so you own't have to download them yourself. I offer several other CD's with useful information that you might be interested in. I offer a CD with courses offered by the US Army and US Navy in metalworking, welding, engines, and associated courses that might be of interest. If you would like a copy of any of the other CD's or multiple copies of this one, you can have as many as you want for an additional $5 by picking them up through my eBay store and get free shipping. Just take a look at my other auctions or email me!
