3 Vintage French Linen Sheets c1908 Monogram DJ Drapes?

These lovely linen metis (an old blend of linen and cotton) sheets are thick, heavy quality with some slubs, which is a natural occurance in these natural fibres. They are smooth not coarse to the touch, and an ivory white colour. They still have the faint lines of the original colour of the linen, so haven't been used extensively. The ivory tones of the sheets vary slightly, which is to be expected with natural fibres. These 3 sheets are thick and quite stiff so would make wonderful curtains.

All 3 have a central seam, which shows their age, when the looms were narrower, and so were the beds! The narrow looms were replaced in this area of France at about 1908, so these sheets are at least 100 years old, and a quality that isn't found these days.

Each has a DF or DJ monogram handworked in white in a thickly raised stitch. It is very unusual to find 3 identical sheets. Two of the sheets have the monogram facing upwards, and the other has it facing downward. Please see the photos for more details. The monograms are beautifully decorated with flower buds and leaves trailing through the swirly letters.

The sheets all measure the following size: 200cm wide (79.5") by 240cm long (94")
The monograms measure 24cm wide (9") by 15cm high (6")

I have given the sheets a refreshing wash, but there may still be storage marks from years of storage in an armoire, and possibly a  spot of rust here or there, common in stored linen, but easily removed with  the appropriate stain remover.

None of the 'faults' described above detract from the beauty of the sheets, and are only mentioned for accuracy. The sheets are in very good condition with tight seams, and good strong metis. Although the central seam and monogram are hand-done, the hems are machined.

These sheets formed part of a bride's dowry linen or trousseau, with both their initials monogrammed onto all the household linen. Some were made by the bride herself, and others given as wedding presents, and made by female members of her family.

They would make perfect curtains or drapes covering a patio window, or other large space, as metis linen drapes beautifully and is popular with interior designers for that reason, and because it takes dye easily.

The linen would also be perfect for large tablecloths, pelmets, as sheets as originally intended, or, because it is still so strong, any upholstery or slipcover project you have in mind. Offcuts can be used for cushions, scented door hangers, or pieced together to make a wonderful patchwork quilt incorporating other vintage textiles and even monograms, like the one I saw recently.

Freshly washed and ironed so ready to use!!

They weigh over 5kg in total!!

Most of the items that I list will be vintage or used, so may show signs of their previous history, which is the whole charm of these pre-loved items. If you are looking for a pristine, unused item, then my finds are probably not for you. I do my best to describe their condition accurately. Generally I find that these items have been cherished possessions at a time when people did not live in such a throwaway society, so they made things to last, and took care of them.
