Next to selecting the correct wax for your candles, the second most important decision in candle making is choosing the proper size and type of wick. A wick too large for the diameter of the candle will smoke excessively, will burn too fast and the wax will run over the sides of the candle. A wick that is too small will "extinguish itself" because it doesn't burn the wax.

When you light the wick, the flame melts the surrounding wax. The molten wax is absorbed and travels up the wick where it is burned off. The flame is constantly fed fuel in this manner and the wax is slowly consumed.

When you choose your wick, take into consideration the diameter and the purpose of the candle. The size of the hole melted in the candle is directly related to the size of the wick. In the case of a dripless candle, the function of the wick is to consume all the wax. If the diameter of the candle is small, use a fairly small wick. To make a candle that drips, just increase the size of the wick. If you want a candle to have a glow-through effect, use a medium wick for a medium size candle. A well or hole will melt down into the candle as it burns.

Candle wicking is available in two basic types: Flat Braid and Wire. Wire core wick is made by braiding prepared cotton around a metal core. As the wick burns, the metal melts into very small droplets and rests in the molten pool of wax. Flat Braid wick is a prepared wick having four sides. It is easy to work with and is made to bend over and consume itself as it burns.
