Well, my wife and I will be doing about $3000 worth of booth recovering soon on our second phone call from the first mailing!
We got back about six undeliverable pieces from our first mailing (160 pieces) so my wife (what a woman!) immediately mailed out six new ones to compensate. Next day--bam, a call from a local Mexican restaurant. He wants 22 booths recovered!

It doesn't matter whether you are male or female. If you are even slightly handy you can easily make hundreds of dollars a day fixing those holes, cuts and tears you see in the seating of pretty much any place that uses vinyl seating.
That's right, hundreds of dollars a day and more doing simple restaurant seating repairs.
Restaurant seating repair is a surprisingly easy business that requires little learning time, low investment to return start-up costs. Restaurant seating repair allows you to be your own boss while returning a very nice income, part-time or full time, as you build a business that can be sold later.
I know that you have been in restaurants that have tears, holes and rips in the seating. I know that you have seen duct tape stuck to them in an attempt to keep the damage from getting any worse. Sometimes there seems to be more duct tape than seating material.
That damage is unsightly and makes people wonder what the kitchen is like if the seating is in such bad shape. Damaged seating causes customers to order less and return less.
Any restaurant worth its salt wants damaged seating repaired.
Repairing a damaged seat is very simple and takes about a half hour.
- Remove the damaged cover (a simple matter of removing the staples).
- Slip the new cover over the stripped seat.
- Staple the new cover to the bottom of the seat.
And for this you charge whatever the traffic will bear.
I charge $80 per seat. One of my brothers charges "according to the price of their hamburgers." The more they charge for hamburgers, figuratively speaking, the more he charges to fix a seat, any where from $55 to $120.
And that's pretty much all profit. You do 10 or more of those a few times a week and it quickly adds up to good money.

I am charging them $55 rather than my usual $85 (2003 prices) a seat because they supply their own material. The manager bought 24 brand new booth seats to replace some damaged ones he had and then he called me to see if I could fix the old ones. I take the extras home to work on in my leisure and then take them back to swap out for more. I'm on my second load and there at least are two more loads yet to do. That's $5280 for a little over two weeks' total work.
That's good money. People wonder why I never seem to work.

But don't take my word for it, anyone hoping to interest you in their business would tell you there is a need for that business. Go look for yourself. Fixtures in bad need of work will be easy to find. Heck, I'm sure you pretty much have already seen torn up seating, it's everywhere.

Very little of the work involves total reworking of the entire section. When you look at this seating section, the thought of reworking it is a little overwhelming for someone who has no idea what they are doing.
But that isn't any problem because...
The Restaurant Seating Repair Business Is Easy To Learn:

The seating section breaks down into easy-to-deal-with parts: base frame, booth seat, back, decorative panels. You recover, or repair, the individual parts and then reassemble them. If you were to see it done, you'd slap your forehead at how straight forward it is.
There are only about half a dozen different kinds of seating fixtures in use in the hospitality industry and most of them vary in only how the fixture looks. They all follow very similar construction, You tear one booth seat apart and put it back together again the chances are very good that you'll be able to do the same with any of the other styles. And most fixtures will require only minimal tearing apart. Rarely do you have to do a lot of work to repair any fixture.
The Restaurant Seating Repair Business Is Easy To Do:
Most of the work you can do with less than a $100 worth of hand tools. There are some extra tools that allow you to work faster and easier, but the small amount of tools you really need to do the work will fit in an easily carried tool box.

The material costs to do the work are minimal. You have little overhead. You need no shop, no business phone, no advertising, you can literally operate out of your house.

Remember this pic a few lines back? I did 34 of them at $215, plus some other little doo-dads the client wanted, in 10 mostly under 8 hour days. I billed $7310 for the booth sections alone.
My brothers and I joke amongst ourselves and say that if we put in regular 8 hour days actually doing the business, we'd really make money. I do not recall working all that many full 40 hour weeks in the repair business in nearly 40 years. We like to do other things too much (hunting, fishing, horses). Luckily, this business allows us the freedom to do them.

Most repair jobs can be done in a few hours and what you make depends on a number of factors such as the amount of damage needing repair and what you are able to get the restaurant manager to pay to fix that damage. I personally target about $100 an hour. I go in, look the job over, estimate how long it will take me to do the job (after a few jobs you can come pretty close just by walking through the establishment) and multiply that by $100 and that's the estimate. If I'm snowed under and have a backlog, I'll target closer to $150. If I don't get the work it doesn't matter, since I'm busy anyway, if I do get the work, I come out ahead.
- Restaurant seating repair is a very profitable business. It is not uncommon to do over $2000 worth of repairs with one $16 jar of repair compound. If you do a booth seat recover the material runs around $12 a seat and you charge whatever you think the traffic will bear. My charge for a straight 4-top seat is $80. He "hired" my dad, my brother Rodney and I to help him out for very generous wages on a repair job one evening. The job was finished in 3 hours and as we sat in a truck stop chowing down afterwards he showed us his invoice for the job, what his expenses were and his profit. He made more money in one evening repairing seating than we did in a whole week of doing sofas.
It suddenly dawned on us that Earl wasn't charging people $20 to $30 to fix $2 pieces of vinyl. He was charging people to repair their entire seating arrangement at $20 to $30 a seat.
We ordered our vinyl repair equipment the next morning, we already had everything else we needed. That day we stopped being upholsterers and became restaurant seating repairers.
