Cut resistant gloves are not cut proof. Caution should be used when handling sharp objects. Complacency is a hazard to be avoided! Deep lacerations may sever nerves and or tendons. Lacerations may account for up to 40% of injuries in a plant, depending on the type of work being done. Proper safety equipment is a must to help reduce these types of injuries.
A palm coated glove will help to reduce material "in the grasp" from slipping which leads to slice injuries. The added griping power of a palm coated glove coupled with high tech cut resistant fibers will go a long way to reduce serious and potentially permanent debilitating injuries.
When selecting a cut resistant glove there are a few important considerations to take into account.
  1. There are two standards applied to cut resistance. EN388 and ASTM 1790-04. EN388 is the European standard and the ASTM is the US standard. Both use cut levels to generalize cut resistance. The ASTM standard is more stringent and requires more cut resistance of the fibers than the EN388 standard.
  2. Both standards use cut levels to rank fibers. 1 is the lowest and 5 is the highest. These levels refer only to cut resistance and do not apply to puncture, abrasion, or tear.
  3. All fibers are tested and ranked by both standards according to the weight (measured in grams) required to cut the fabric 3/4 of an inch. This information is much more important than general cut level information.
  4. The key importance is to compare gram scores and not cut levels as the two standards have different requirements between levels. A fiber scoring a cut level 5 from the EN388 standard may only be a cut level 4 according to the ASTM standard.
  5. Many companies promote cut resistant products. It is important to only consider suppliers that are willing to provide test data for the product they are promoting.
