Item Description

You are buying 36+ red and black Rosary Bead / Prayer Bead (Abrus precatorius) seeds. These seeds are poisonous, may be deadly, in fact, especially if ground up and eaten; do not use on projects for children or pets. These are sold as SEEDS, they do not have holes in them for stringing.

Other common names: Rosary Pea, Crab's Eye, Precatory Bean, Jequeriti, olho-de-cabra.

These striking red & black seeds of the precatory bean are used for necklaces in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America. They are sometimes called prayer beans and rosary beans and have been used for rosaries - said to bring good luck to the wearer. I have seen these used to simulate lady-bugs or red, beady-eyes in craft projects. They are also striking in a group like for a Christmas wreath or candy cane.

I have had several people tell me they were using these in the making of Sailor's Valentines.

Sailor's valentines were made in Barbados between 1830 and 1880 by the natives and sold to English and American sailors. This was a port of call for the ships coming home. The sailors bought these souvenirs home as tokens of love to their wives or girlfriends.

These seeds are very hard-shelled and well dried.

If you would like to plant these seeds, they are fresh seeds (January- March 2009 harvest) and viable. Planting instructions will be included with them. These grow on a vine which can become invasive in tropical areas. Flowers on the vine are small, pink colored and relatively inconspicuous. Their real attraction is the bright red seeds that form in pods in the winter. This vine is cold hardy in zone 9b and warmer.

From my experience, these DO NOT BLOOM THE FIRST YEAR when grown from seed, so they are not suitable to be grown as an annual in colder zones.
