3W THE CRUSADES The Battles of Antioch, Ascalon, Acre and Arsouf A Quad Game by Rob Markham Designed by award winning designer Rob Markham, The Crusades Quad contains four of the most important battles of the Crusades, set in the time when western Europe was using its military might to expand into areas it had not controlled since Roman times. The Crusaders' goal was to free Palestine and the Near East from Muslim dominance, and restore Christianity's birthplace to Christian rule. Based on the popular Royalists & Roundheads system, the game features an innovative, easy to use command system that recreates the problems of command in an elegant and simple way. Leaders are rated for command, initiative, and combat. Special rules reflect the abilities and weaknesses of the Crusaders' heavy cavalry. Each of the four games is complete in itself, and can be played in 1 1/2 to 3 hours, with the ever-present possibility of one side or the other triggering an automatic victory. From the package of the game itself: THE CRUSADES - 4 GAMES IN A SINGLE BOX Designed by award winning designer, Rob Markham, The Crusades Quad contains four of the most important battles of the Crusades--set in the time when western Europe was using its military might to expand into areas it had not controlled since Roman times. Antioch: June 28, 1098. On June 4, 1098, Antioch had fallen to the Crusaders, led by Duke Godfrey. By June 7, a relieving force under the leadership of Qawam ad-Daula Kerboga, the Emir of Mosul, had reached Antioch. He immediately invested the city, this time with the Crusaders inside. Twenty-one days later, their food nearly gone, but with the discovery of the "Holy Lance" that had pierced Christ's side the Crusaders filed out onto the plains in front of Antioch to decide the issue of their survival. In the ensuing battle, the Crusaders, with their use of their cavalry, won a surprising and important victory. Ascalon: August 14, 1099. After Ascalon, the next major action would pit the Crusaders under Godfrey with the Egyptian forces led by Fatimite leader, El-Mustali Abul-Kasim Ahmed. When Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders in late July, the Egyptian Emir had set forth to retake Jerusalem. Godfrey, upon learning of this, decided to meet them as soon as possible and sallied forth. The two forces met outside the small town of Arsouf, and the final heavy cavalry charge by Raymond of Toulose would drive the Egyptian left flank into the Mediterranean, and give the Crusaders on of their most complete victories. Acre: October 4, 1189. In August 1189, King Guy and his Christian army had begun their siege of Acre in an attempt to recover some of the kingdom lost as a result of the disaster of Tiberias two years earlier. By late September, the relieving force of Saladin had gathered around the Crusaders, who now found themselves between the garrison of Acre and the main army of Saladin. On October 4, Guy gave the order to deploy and attack Saladin's forces. Little did Guy know that he was doing exactly what his opponent wanted him to do. As the Crusaders advanced across the field, gaps began to appear in their lines as they stretched to cover the front line that the larger Muslim army created. The battle would end in disaster as the Turkish cavalry would exploit the gaps, and teach King Guy a costly lesson. Arsouf: September 7, 1191. After the fall of Acre in July of 1191, Richard the Lion Hearted led his force toward Jaffa to set up a base for a strike inland at Jerusalem. Dogging his every move, Saladin waited for his chance to strike and destroy the Crusaders.
