Offered here is a 4" long Large Size Cobalt Blue Iridised Carnival Art Glass solid Strawberry made by the Intaglio Art Glass Studio and Gary Levi in the late 1990's. It is signed "Levi '97" with diamond pen. It was mouth blown and finished in the off hand method using Fenton Cobalt Blue cullet. We made these is 2 sizes, this is large 4" size.
The strawberry started its life as a gob of cobalt blue on the end of the glass blowers pipe which was shoved into a diamond optic mould causing indentations in the glass, making it look and feel like a real strawberry. After it was removed from the optic mould it was warmed in, shaped into the strawberry shape completely by hand and sprayed with metalic salts. While one glass blower was producing the body of the strawberry another was preparing the hand twisted stem. After the berry was broken off the pipe the stem was added to the pipe end and the glass was annealled. The result is a luscious dark cobalt blue strawberry of iridised art glass with a beautiful clear cobalt blue stem.
This piece is a perfect example of American hand made Studio Glass made without the use of any machine. Only the glass workers skill can produce something so special. Because of the unique way in which all our art glass was produced each piece is a one of a kind work of glass as art, rare, rare, rare!
The Levi Intaglio Art Glass Studio under the direction and guidance of Gary W. Levi melted it's first pot of glass at 209 E. Vandalia St. in Edwardsville, IL on October 11, 1984. The studio was moved to Alton, IL in 1993 where it continued to produced high quality art glass until it was closed at the end of 1998. The studio will not reopen.
The opportunity to use Fenton cullet became available to us in the late 1980's and we ultilized not only Cobalt Blue but also Rosalene, Misty Blue, Burmese, Green opal, Ruby, Vaseline, Emerald Green, Aquamarine, Cranberry, Opal, Crystal and Dusty Rose. This piece is from the personal collection of Dodie & Gary Levi owners of The Levi Intaglio Art Glass Studio.
